Hi,
My mother's maiden name is Lingo, and the biggest roadblock I've encountered through my family history research is the origin of the name and the history beyond my great-great grandfather, Jacob Lingo (1887-1971, born in Zala County (former) of the Austro-Hungarian empire. He immigrated to Columbus, Ohio where many Lingos (including myself) still reside. From what I do know about him, his parents names are Steve Lingo and Anna Szarfoldi.
The most common origin that I've found is that Lingo is a Scottish surname derived from the lands of Lingoch. However, this doesn't make much sense considering the origins of my mom's side of the family- aka, austrian-german and potentially hungarian. So, if anyone has any insight on this please let me know. Not sure if maybe lingo is an abbreviation for something longer and my gg grandfather tried to "americanize" it, or if this is all just a lost cause.
